The Time I Fell In Love With Hawks Cay Resort

Hi everyone –

Nina here! I often don’t write personal blog entries because I assume you get enough of my blabbing on Instagram & the newsletter. But some things, I just can’t hold in. This past week, a few Sidewalkers (@expedition_196, @nicdelmar, @bronzeandbriny @sassymodernmom) and I headed over to the Hawks Cay Resort in the Florida Keys for a little staycation. I find that the tricky thing with travel blogging that unless you’re one of the few that gets to travel all year round, it can be challenging to create new content. I’m a HUGE fan of promoting the whole “explore your backyard” approach to travel blogging. While I am based in Miami, there’s so many amazing things to do, driving distance away. As most Floridians will vouch – we don’t head to the Keys enough. I think partially it’s because we don’t know of all the hidden gems that exist.

I’m here to share with you by far the most amazing resort in the Florida. Drum roll please:

Hawks Cay Resort

Hawks Cay Resort is located on Duck Key in the Middle Florida Keys. Situated roughly halfway between Key Largo and Key West at mile marker 61, this 60acre, tropical destination is easily accessible by car, boat or plane yet feels worlds away from everyday life. It’s also a 20 minute drive from the most BEAUTIFUL BEACH IN THE ENTIRE KEYS. We stayed for 2 nights – so tried our best to do as much as possible, but in all honesty, 2 days doesn’t give it justice. Check out my photo diary below!

9 AM

We all met in the lobby and headed down to the Dolphin Connection. I used to live in the Bahamas, so anything with Dolphins makes me feel right at home. Hawks Cay Resort is the only hotel or resort in the mainland United States that offers free public viewing of trained dolphins. They also offer a variety of educational and exciting programs for adults, children and the entire family to enjoy. Whether you choose to jump in the water for a hands-on dolphin encounter, learn how to train dolphins or sit on the dock and admire fantastic aerial behaviors, your heart is sure to burst with serious happy vibes.

Photoshoot time! We decided to go explore the resort and take tons of pictures (of course, what all Sidewalkers do best) Not only is the hotel full of amazing photo opps, there’s literally so much to do!

4:15 PM

The girls and I later met on the dock for a Sunset Cruise. After running around the resort all day – it was exactly what we needed: A gorgeous sunset + some vino. They also provide a champagne toast right at sunset. #WINNING

7:00 PM

After some sunset drankssss, we headed over to eat at one of the most delicious restaurants on the resort- Angler and Ale

Literally – everything on this menu is to die for. We ordered a bit of everything and shared because why not?

  1. LOBSTER MAC N CHEESE, (Cavatappi pasta, Florida lobster, smoked gouda, parmesan bread crumbs)
  2. BROILED FLORIDA LOBSTER (Drawn butter and fresh lemon)
  3. ISLAND TUNA CRUDO (Mango, papaya, cucumber, tomato, green onion, shoyu, coconut milk, chili)
  4. TUNA NACHOS (Blackened seared, rare tuna on a wonton crisp with pickled ginger and seaweed salad, finished with a wasabi cream and garlic chili aioli)
  5. KEY LIME PIE (Toasted meringue, fresh raspberries)

10 AM

Jen, Lyanne, Jeanette and I met at the Sundance Watersports hut at the Marina for a jet ski tour. We explored Florida Keys wildlife, sunken wrecks and had tons of free play time on the open waters. Our guides, Stephanie and Jake, were SOOOO kind and amazing. By far one of the most fun activities of the trip! Below, Jeanette from @NICDELMAR – co-owner of an amazing boutique in Coral Gables – dying for everything on their site!

2 PM

Duck Key is a kayaking paradise. Paddle through serene channels lined with luxury homes and boats, head out to explore deserted Tom’s Island or venture underneath the bridges and cut through channels lined with mangroves. Here’s a photo of Stephanie (@sassymodernmom) kayaking like a pro!

4 PM

We headed out to Bahia Honda beach (about 20 minute drive from the resort) to get a little beach action. As I mentioned before, by far the most gorgeous beach in the entire Florida Keys – and it’s only 20 minutes away! You get to cross the iconic 7 mile bridge which in itself is an adventure. Bahia Honda is a National Park – so there is an entrance fee – but 100000% worth the drive. Even though the resort is fabulous enough to stay as a destination, if you’re looking for a little beach action – I’d recommend it!

7:30 PM

While Angler & Ale is deliciously boater casual, Alma is a bit more elegantly informal. We all met for dinner and drinks on our last night. These type of trips are just WAY TOO SHORT. I am so happy I got to experience this beyond fabulous hotel with this group of ladies! The resort was truly magical and I can NOT wait to go back!

For dinner:

  1. Stone Crabs for the table!
  2. PAN ROASTED DIVER SCALLOPS (Bronzed potato gnocchi, baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, exotic mushroom fricassee)
  3. Assorted desserts: COCONUT CRÈME BRULEE (Burnt sugar, fresh Florida berries) & CHOCOLATE MARQUISE (Raspberry puree)

Hawks Cay Resort – my new favorite place on earth! Have you been or planning to go in the future? Let me know in the comments!
